Metrolinx is adding a mapping function to the public consultation site
- Jacquie from Metrolinx took us throught the prototype (an .exe file currently)
The map will take you through
- a live aerial map
- between various points of your journey
The map
- is intended to allow people to write their own routes, to tell the story of where they go and what their experiences are
- the map data from all contributors will then be aggregated in a database and metrolinx will look at what the patterns are: where are the bottleknecks are?
- allows you to write your comments on your map
- issues which may be considered are broad in scope: i.e. need for bike racks/lockers, need for improved lighting, safety, transit mode
Suggestions for Improvement
- make sure the origin/end-point of systems is not postal code based (i.e. because postal codes are not intuitive)
- the mapping system should work on all systems (i.e. Mac, PC, open-source OS)
- people should be able to note their transitions between modes (i.e. where they drive, where they walk, where they take transit, where they carpool)
- the consultation needs to be PROMOTED where citizens, bicyclists, transit-users and commuters ARE (i.e. on transit, at events, at stations): Ideas would be to: 1) take the mapping consultation tool to the citizens/pedestrians/transit-users etc., 2) hand out flyers to drive traffic to your consultation site
Questions
Q1: After citizens/transit users are consulted, how do changes get made? What is the plan for taking action?
Q2: How will Metrolinx get the word out about the consultation? (Mass media, blogging etc.)
