Metrolinx is adding a mapping function to the public consultation site

- Jacquie from Metrolinx took us throught the prototype (an .exe file currently)

The map will take you through
-    a live aerial map
-    between various points of your journey

The map
-    is intended to allow people to write their own routes, to tell the story of where they go and what their experiences are
-    the map data from all contributors will then be aggregated in a database and metrolinx will look at what the patterns are: where are the bottleknecks are?
-    allows you to write your comments on your map
-    issues which may be considered are broad in scope: i.e. need for bike racks/lockers, need for improved lighting, safety, transit mode

Suggestions for Improvement

- make sure the origin/end-point of systems is not postal code based (i.e. because postal codes are not intuitive)

- the mapping system should work on all systems (i.e. Mac, PC, open-source OS)

- people should be able to note their transitions between modes (i.e. where they drive, where they walk, where they take transit, where they carpool)

- the consultation needs to be PROMOTED where citizens, bicyclists, transit-users and commuters ARE (i.e. on transit, at events, at stations): Ideas would be to: 1) take the mapping consultation tool to the citizens/pedestrians/transit-users etc., 2) hand out flyers to drive traffic to your  consultation site

Questions

Q1: After citizens/transit users are consulted, how do changes get made? What is the plan for taking action?

Q2: How will Metrolinx get the word out about the consultation? (Mass media, blogging etc.)

I agree with the GUI (graphical user interface) approach. Maybe there could be touch screen booths in subways stations or at bus hubs where riders can enter their ride information, similar to the metropass/Go ticket self sales booths (can't use existing booths because it would defeat the efficiency of the self-sales process). May be it could collect data based on day of week & time of day? route data could be just defined as A to B end points (ie user just wants fastest route between the two) and/or A to B with suggested route (ie user would rather travel on a retail streetscape instead of an industrial streetscape). I'd be interested in defining express route options, example, with all the new residential construction going on, maybe there could be WEEKEND express routes between destinations, king west to the easter beaches, north york to western beaches, express service to Canada's Wonderland, (one summer I tested TTC route from York Mills (1 1/2 hrs?) to GO route from York Mills (30-40 mins?) I'd definitely recommend spending the extra few $ for the GO even though I'm an avid TTC supporter), etc.
