Some councillors in some areas will oppose light rail transit (LRT) and bus rapid transit (BRT) if it reduces the number of lanes available for cars.

The reality is that LRT and BRT increase the capacity of a given corridor.  They are much more efficient at moving people and goods than single-occupant motor vehicles.

By increasing the number of people who can access the corridor, LRT and BRT systems are also a boon to development in these areas.  With access to more potential customers, businesses will want to locate in these areas.

For similar reasons, improved accessibility, LRT and BRT increase the values of adjacent properties.

In sum, it's good for the local economy.

Parking lots could be provided at either end of the LRT or BRT system to ease access to the corridor by car for those who live far away.
